Overcoming Heartbreaking Malnutrition: Nihal's Story of Resilience

Black Arrow

Nihal, a resilient 7-month-old girl from Aslam, Hajjah, has overcome severe acute malnutrition (SAM) with the aid of ADRA's nutritional intervention. Her health issues, compounded by her family's limited resources, were severe; her diet of goat's milk and sparse food weakened her immune system, leaving her critically undernourished.

The turning point came with ADRA's outpatient nutrition clinic at Al-Thalouth Health Center. Here, Nihal embarked on a 76-day recovery program. Her parents, educated about health and nutrition, were instrumental in her recovery, ensuring she received weekly nutritional support.

Marking the end of her treatment, Nihal's transformation was striking—energetic and interacting with other children; her restored health was a joy for her family and the medical team.

ADRA's YEMA II project has been vital in Aslam/Hajjah, providing free medical and nutritional services and lifting the burden off families like Nihal's. Nihal's recovery illustrates how focused humanitarian efforts can turn the tide, offering hope and a healthier tomorrow.

In the secluded Aljawl Alsadah camp in Abyan, home to 842 people, ADRA's encounter with Fatima, a dedicated mother of five, highlights the daily challenges faced by displaced families. Fatima, her husband Yahya, and their children, who once lived by the sea in Al-Hudaidah, found refuge in the camp after the harrowing impacts of war disrupted their lives.

The family's routine in the camp included arduous treks for water, with a 15-minute walk to the nearest free water source for drinking and a 1.5 to 2-hour journey to a farm for other daily needs.

ADRA's initiative has dramatically improved access to water in the camp by installing two clean drinking water tanks, now only minutes away, and by providing solar panels and a submersible pump for well water extraction. Alongside this, ADRA has conducted hygiene awareness programs and distributed essential hygiene kits to the families.

Fatima expresses her gratitude for the YEMLI Project, supported by USAID Middle East, which has significantly reduced illness and eased the physical burden on the community, enhancing their quality of life.
